Areas of application for rPET Recompound

Our cosmetic-grade r-PET recompounds are suitable for the manufacture of products that are intended to come into contact with cosmetics. These include cans and lids, for example.

Recycled PET as an ABS alternative

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is mainly used in the automotive industry and in the manufacture of electronic housings. However, as the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) is taking an increasingly critical view of the component styrene and an imminent ban within the EU for use in products intended to come into contact with the skin cannot be ruled out, an alternative to ABS must be offered.
This is where our rPET recompound comes into play, which is suitable for cosmetics. Our recycled PET is harmless and therefore well suited for the production of cosmetic containers or lids.

Environmentally friendly materials in the industry: PET recompound as an alternative to new production

Sustainability is an important topic in business today. More and more companies are looking for ways to make their products and services more environmentally friendly. Recycled plastic offers a promising alternative to virgin material. Find out here why rPET recompound is a sustainable alternative and what significance rPET has as a recyclable plastic.

What is a PET recompound?

PET recompound is a material made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET is a widely used plastic that is often used for the production of beverage bottles, packaging and textiles.
Its use helps to reduce plastic waste and promote the circular economy by reusing waste materials and conserving resources.

Advantages of using PET recompound

The use of PET recompounds offers many advantages for companies interested in sustainable production. The use of PET recompounds reduces the need for new raw materials and thus conserves resources. Greenhouse gas emissions are also reduced, as less energy is required to produce new raw materials.

How does PET recompounding work?

The PET recompounding process involves several steps aimed at processing recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into a high-quality new material. First, used PET, mainly from bottles and packaging, is collected and sorted to ensure that only PET material and no other plastics or contaminants enter the recycling process. This can be done manually or using automated systems such as infrared sensors.

The sorted PET is then shredded into small flakes or granules, which facilitates the further cleaning process. These PET flakes are then washed to remove contaminants such as labels, adhesives, dirt and other foreign matter. This step can involve several washing processes, including hot washing and chemical treatment. After washing, the PET flakes must be thoroughly dried, as moisture can affect the quality of the recycled material. This is often done in special drying plants that bring the flakes to a low residual moisture content.

The dried PET flakes are then fed into an extruder, where they are melted and processed into a homogeneous melt product. The extruder operates at high temperatures and under high pressure. In this step, additives or other plastics can be added to the melted PET to achieve the desired material properties. Additives can be colourants, stabilizers, reinforcing fibres or other modifiers that improve the performance of the final material.

The molten PET mass is then passed through a filter system to remove any remaining impurities and ensure material purity. The filtered PET is then extruded through a die and cut into small granules or pellets. These pellets are the finished PET recompound that can be used to manufacture new products.

Finally, the finished PET recompound is subjected to strict quality controls to ensure that it meets the required specifications and standards. This may include tests for mechanical properties, color, viscosity and other relevant parameters. The high-quality PET recompound is then supplied to manufacturers who use it in new products, such as packaging, textiles, automotive parts, electronic housings and other plastic products.

The transition to a circular economy: quality control in the production of PET recompound

Quality control at PET Recompound is crucial to ensure that the recycled material meets the required standards. The process begins with the collection and sorting of the PET waste, using only high-quality PET. Once the PET flakes have been shredded and cleaned, they are checked for contaminants, often through visual inspections and automated systems.

During the extrusion and compounding process, sensors continuously monitor melt quality, including temperature and viscosity. This real-time data helps to control the process and ensure the desired material properties.

After extrusion and pelletizing, the pellets are subjected to various tests. Mechanical tests, thermal analyses and chemical tests ensure that the material meets the requirements. Physical properties such as density and melt index are also checked. Regular spot checks guarantee the consistency of production.

The color and transparency of the material are also checked. Before shipping, there are final quality checks to ensure that the material remains in perfect condition during transportation. These comprehensive measures guarantee that PET recompound is a high-quality and reliable material.
